What is the Open Space and Recreation Plan?
The Town of Groton is updating its Open Space and Recreation Plan to help guide the future protection, stewardship, and enjoyment of the community’s natural lands, recreation facilities, trails,
farms, forests, water resources, and scenic landscapes.
Groton has a strong tradition of conservation, outdoor recreation, agricultural preservation, and community stewardship. Building on the goals of the 2024 Master Plan, the updated Open Space and Recreation Plan will identify new opportunities to protect important resources, improve recreation and trail connections, strengthen climate resilience, and ensure that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy Groton’s open spaces and recreation opportunities.
The Plan will also establish priorities and action steps for the next seven years, and help maintain Groton’s eligibility for state conservation and recreation grant programs.
The Planning Process will:
- Inventory Groton’s conservation lands, recreation facilities, trails, forest and agricultural resources, water resources, wildlife habitat, and other natural and community assets.
- Evaluate existing recreation infrastructure and opportunities, public access, stewardship needs, and connections between open spaces.
- Identify priority areas for conservation, recreation, trail connectivity, agricultural preservation, water resource protection, and climate resilience.
- Explore opportunities to improve universal accessibility, and provide open space and recreation opportunities that serve the entire community.
- Establish goals, strategies, and priority actions for the next seven years.
- Identify potential partnerships, funding sources, and implementation responsibilities.
How to Get Involved
Community participation is an important part of the planning process. Whether you use Groton’s trails and recreation facilities, care about our farms, forests, wildlife, and clean water, or have ideas about future recreation and conservation needs, the Town wants to hear from you!
