Subsidized Apartments in Groton for Low Income Households

Subsidized Apartments in Groton for Low Income Households

Please refer to the income chart below to determine your income eligibility for subsidized apartments.

Groton Housing Authority – apartments serving families and senior/disabled individuals. Rents set as a percentage of income. The housing authorities provide deeply subsidized apartments to low-income households.  Generally, waitlists are shortest for seniors aged 60 and up.  And generally, the longest waits are for families with children and disabled adults who are not seniors (age 18 to 59).  See Groton Housing Authority flyer and CHAMP application.

Applicants may now apply online, which has several advantages over a paper application. Applicants using the CHAMP online application can apply for numerous housing authorities at the same time. And, applicants can use the online access to make corrections to their application.

There are approximately 43,000 housing authority apartments across the Commonwealth.  That large number of potential apartments plus the easy online application make it the most important housing application for many applicants.  Because of the high demand for affordable housing, the Commonwealth makes frequent changes to its administration of the waitlists.  These days, to be offered an apartment, applicants must pay close attention and respond immediately to any housing authority emails and letters.

Here is an Eligibility Screening notice taken from the CHAMP application that emphasizes the need to be prepared to submit eligibility documents:

When you make it to the top of a waitlist, you will be contacted by a Housing Agency to begin the Eligibility Screening Process. This process will involve providing documents to help verify things like your income and assets, household information, and your current residential address. The Housing Agency conducting the screening process will use these documents to verify that you are eligible and qualified for state-aided housing assistance.

Once you’re contacted by a Housing Agency to begin the Eligibility Screening Process, it will be very important to respond as soon as possible, even if you don’t have all the documentation you need right away.

Wait times for beginning the Eligibility Screening Process can vary from months to years, depending on the waitlist. While you wait, you can get a head start by keeping your application information up-to-date and by gathering the following documentation:

    • Birth Certificates
    • SSN Cards
    • Financial Records

As noted above, if you are not currently in Eligibility Screening, it may take a long time for your application to be considered. If you wish to upload screening documents prior to receiving a screening letter from a Housing Agency, you may do so here.

Please note that documents uploaded before you are in Eligibility Screening may become out of date and you may need to upload more recent documentation at that time.

The Commonwealth selects applicants based on a system of preferences and priorities.  If you have an urgent need for subsidized housing and are applying to a housing authority, it is important that your application fully explain how you might qualify for priorities and preferences that will result in being offered an apartment sooner.

You can receive a preference and be placed higher on the waitlist if you are a veteran or if you live in the town where the housing authority is located.

You can receive a priority and be placed on the emergency waitlist – a much faster list – if your situation matches one of the recognized homeless priorities.  Please see this checklist for a description of each priority.  And another description of the priority system can be found in this guidance.
