What do the Percentages mean?

VA disability compensation is assigned in percentage increments from 0% to 100%. As a Veteran’s rating increases, additional benefits may be available at the federal (VA), Massachusetts state, and sometimes local level.

Note: Benefits build upon each other — higher ratings generally include benefits from lower ratings.

0% Rating

  • Service-connected condition recognized

  • Eligibility for VA healthcare for that condition

10% – 20% Rating

Includes all benefits above, plus:

  • Monthly tax-free compensation

  • Eligibility for expanded VA healthcare access

  • May qualify for limited Massachusetts Veterans’ services support

30% – 40% Rating

Includes all benefits above, plus:

  • Additional compensation for dependents

  • Expanded VA healthcare coverage

50% Rating

Includes all benefits above, plus:

  • No-cost VA healthcare for all conditions

  • VA prescription coverage

  • Increased access to state and local assistance programs

60% Rating

Includes all benefits above, plus:

  • Higher compensation levels

  • Increased likelihood of qualifying for TDIU

  • Greater access to financial and medical support programs in Massachusetts

70% Rating

Includes all benefits above, plus:

  • Strong eligibility for TDIU (Individual Unemployability)

  • Expanded access to mental health care and long-term services

80% – 90% Rating

Includes all benefits above, plus:

  • Higher monthly compensation

  • Greater access to Massachusetts property tax exemptions (amount varies by disability level and municipality)

  • Eligibility for additional local Veteran benefits and fee waivers

100% Rating (Schedular)

Includes all benefits above, plus:

Federal (VA) Benefits

  • Maximum monthly compensation

  • Comprehensive VA healthcare

  • VA dental care

  • Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)

  • CHAMPVA healthcare for dependents

  • Commissary and exchange privileges

Massachusetts Benefits

  • Significant property tax exemption (varies by municipality; often substantial relief at 100%)

  • Motor vehicle excise tax exemption (for qualifying disabled Veterans)

  • Disabled Veteran license plates (no fee) (handicap only)

  • Hunting and fishing licenses at no cost

Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU)

Paid at the 100% rate, even if the schedular rating is lower.

Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)

Additional compensation for Veterans with severe disabilities or specific needs.
