Discharge Document Repository
Massachusetts law provides an important safeguard for veterans to protect their military service records.
Under Chapter 115 of Massachusetts General Laws, Veterans Service Officers are required to assist veterans with recording their discharge documents.
What This Means for You:
- Your DD-214 or discharge papers can be officially recorded at no cost
- The VSO maintains a secure, indexed repository of these records
- Certified copies can be issued when needed
- Copies are legally admissible in place of original documents

The 1973 National Archives Fire
In 1973, a devastating fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis destroyed millions of military personnel records.
- Approximately 80% of Army records for personnel discharged between November 1, 1912 and January 1, 1960
- Approximately 75% of Air Force records for personnel discharged between September 25, 1947 and January 1, 1964 (particularly those alphabetically after Hubbard, James E.)
What This Means: If you served during these time periods, your personal copy of your discharge papers may be the only complete record of your military service.
