Real Estate Exemptions & Abatements

Real Estate Exemptions & Abatements

An exemption is a release from the obligation of having to pay taxes on all or part of a parcel of real property. Personal Exemptions are a reduction in taxes due to a particular personal circumstance and qualifications set forth in the Massachusetts General Laws. The burden is on the applicant to show that he or she falls within the expressed terms of the exemption provision.

A variety of exemptions are available to reduce property tax obligations for certain qualifying taxpayers:

    • elderly persons
    • blind persons
    • disabled veterans
    • surviving spouse or orphaned minor child
The qualifying date is July 1st, the first day of the fiscal year. All applications must be received in the Assessor’s Office starting November 1st and no later than April 1st. Applications must be filed annually, per the Department of Revenue.
