Burial Flags
A United States burial flag is provided to honor the military service of a Veteran or Reservist. This flag is presented to the next of kin or a close friend following the passing of an eligible individual.
If you are working with a funeral home, they will typically handle the request and procurement of the burial flag on your behalf. If a funeral home is not being used, your local Veterans Service Officer (VSO) can assist you in obtaining the flag.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a burial flag, the Veteran or Reservist must meet at least one of the following service conditions:

Served during a wartime period, or
-
Died while serving on active duty on or after May 27, 1941, or
-
Served on or after January 31, 1955, or
-
Served during peacetime and:

Completed at least one enlistment before June 27, 1950, or
-
Was discharged due to a disability caused or aggravated by active military service, or
-
-
Served in the Selected Reserves (in qualifying cases), or
-
Served in the military forces of the Philippines while in service of the United States and passed away on or after April 25, 1951
Presidential Memorial Certificate
A Presidential Memorial Certificate is an engraved paper certificate signed by the current President, honoring a deceased and honorably discharged U.S. Veteran. It expresses the nation’s gratitude for their service.
Certificates are available to the next of kin and loved ones through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans buried in national cemeteries typically receive the certificate at the time of burial

For all other cases, certificates must be requested from the NCA
