Library Asbestos Remediation

Expert testing of the library roof this summer revealed the glue used on the 1893 roof contained asbestos. The glue was used to hold the slate tiles in place before the nails were hammered in. This is non-fryable (non-airborne) asbestos. MassDEP (Mass. Department of Environmental Protection) has been on site to review the work, the remediation plan, and all attendant safety regulations and concerns. This is a $37,000 add-on cost to the project, which will be covered by the contingency. All work will be done by a Mass. Certified Asbestos Abatement Contractor and will be overseen by an Environmental Project Manager working on the Town’s behalf to ensure Compliance and Air Monitoring throughout all work.

The work will start on Thursday, September 19th and will be completed in approximately a week.
